Visiting UToledo, what are your impressions of our curriculum and students?

The education students receive from ESSPS provides them a very strong foundation for their career in sales. Learning the USCA approved sales process, combined with well-rounded course offerings and required real world internship experience, prepares the students to hit the ground running upon graduation.

The students are invested in the program! They get involved with the program early and start participating in competitions (like UTISC) in their freshman year. As they progress through their college careers, they mentor and support each other through peer mentorships at competitions, volunteering to help at UTISC, and referring classmates to internship opportunities.

What makes UToledo students a good fit for your organization?

Most of the students we talk with are excelling in the classroom, involved in extracurricular activities, and working one (or multiple) part time jobs. Delivering results, while displaying a strong work ethic and time management skills, is a blueprint for success as they start their careers!

What types of qualities do you look for in students?

Enerpac looks for students who are involved and passionate. We prefer to see a narrow and deep approach – get involved with one or two organizations and make a difference. Look for leadership opportunities – executive committee, sub-committee chair, lead an event/project.

We are also looking for someone with a strong work ethic and time management skills. Being involved in extra-curricular activities: athletics, student government, fraternity/sorority, student organizations, a part time job, etc. We are looking to see how you manage your time and responsibilities and succeed in all you commit to doing.

Lastly, Enerpac looks for someone who has mechanical/technical aptitude. We do not expect you to be a hydraulic tools expert coming in – we will teach you that.

What do you think are the biggest challenges that sales students face?

Students in the ESSPS program are taught a very regimented sales process through the USCA guide. Once they start their career in sales, they will understand that is a great foundation, but sales calls do not follow a standardized rubric/process. Each sales call is unique, and your sales calls may jump all over the page of your USCA process. Be flexible, follow the natural flow of the conversation, and follow up later with any missing information.
